The Tallaght women’s team continued their Division 5 campaign with a trip to Meath to take on Navan.

Tallaght started the game brightly and set up shop in the Navan half. They created several good opportunities but couldn’t quite finish them off. Chloe Conroy looked likely to score after a great run but Navan survived yet again. Eventually Tallaght’s pressure told and Grainne Flood slipped through a gap to score a try which she converted to make the half-time score 7-0 to Tallaght.

In the second quarter of the match, it was Navan’s turn to dominate. They kept the ball for long periods and eventually Navan scored a converted try to ties the game at seven points all.

Tallaght kept fighting and Lisa Connors and Louise Leonard made some big carries and Kim Letterfield put in some crushing tackles. Grainne Flood attempted a long range penalty kick and her kick had the distance but just drifted agonisingly wide.

The game look destined to end in a stalemate as it drifted into added on time. Tallaght were camped on their line defending but won the ball back. However they then knocked it on and Navan recovered to score a try to steal a 12-7 win.

Tallaght skipper Martina Fitzpatrick was disappointed to lose out at the death. “The girls are obviously gutted to lose to a try in the last play of the game. But if we’re honest we should have been much further ahead in the first half. It’s a tough lesson for the girls that you need to make it count on the scoreboard when you’re on top. But the effort was fantastic all game and it was another competitive performance. We’ll learn from it and take it into our next game against Swords.”

Tallaght’s next game against Swords has been brought forward to a 11AM kick-off next Sunday to avoid a clash with the Ireland v Argentina game.
