The Tallaght women’s team took on Edenderry in their first away game of the season in Division 3.
Tallaght started well and had good field position early, but a lack of sharpness in their passing left Edenderry off the hook. Edenderry started going through the phases and though Tallaght made plenty of good tackles, eventually the pressure told. Edenderry broke through to score two tries out wide and converted one to take a 12-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Edenderry were almost in for another try but Lisa O’Connell made a brilliant turnover on the line. It was only a temporary reprieve though, as the relieving kick didn’t go far and Edenderry ran it back to score to take a 19-0 lead. Edenderry scored another converted try before halftime to take a 26-0 lead at halftime. In injury time at the end of the half, Eileen Shanahan appeared to have scored a try but the referee ruled that it was held up.
Eight minutes into the second half, Edenderry scored a fine try and it was converted to make it 33-0. Edenderry were later shown a yellow card for repeated penalties but it didn’t slow them down as they scored three more tries and converted two of them to make the final score 52-0.
Head coach Andy Grace was disappointed with the result but proud of his players attitude. “We know Edenderry well, they’re a very good side, who won Division 4 last season. It’s a hard enough place to come with a full squad, let alone only 17 players and only two subs. A few players let us down at the last minute and that’s not good enough. But I really want to thank all the players who showed up and kept fighting, even though we had more players injured and had to play with one less player on the field at times because we had to go to uncontested scrums. I also feel I could have prepared the team better, so I’ll take the hit on that one. But we’ll regroup and will prepare for our next game in a fortnight, at home to Longford.’
