The Tallaght women’s team took on Swords away in their final game of Division 5/6 Super Six Group A.
Tallaght had a late withdrawal when Faith Perrin pulled out due to illness. So Lucia Benito Marin was brought into the starting line-up for her first appearance of the season after recovering from injury. It didn’t take her long to make a impact though, making several big carries that troubled the Swords pack.
It took Tallaght a while to get out of their half but as soon as they did, they scored. Ellen Crotty was playing her first Tallaght match in over a year but she made a great break and when the ball was recycled, some sharp passing put Kim Littlefield away for a try under the posts. Grainne Leonard Flood converted to make it 7-0 to Tallaght.
Swords tried to hit back but found that Tallaght’s defence was resolute with Aisling Pyke and Sam Ledden making some dominant tackles and skipper Lorraine McManus followed up with crucial poaches for turnovers. Tallaght got themselves in another fine position off a brilliant Megan Fogarty run and then Adriana Silvela, Louise Leonard Flood, Kim Littlefield and Ellen Crotty showed great handling skills to put the indomitable veteran of the team Martina Fitzpatrick in for a try in the corner to make it 12-0 to Tallaght. However the excellent Swords full back scored a fine individual try to hot back and make the halftime score 12-7 to Tallaght.
Tallaght looked to restore their advantage and from a scrum near the Swords line Louise Leonard Flood backed herself and powered over for a try to make it 17-7 to Tallaght. Then midway through the second half, the game was settled as a contest when Chloe Conroy Kearns scored a try and Grainne Leonard Flood converted to make it 24-7. The game got a touch scrappy after that and there was no more scores.
Tallaght coach Adam Nolan was very pleased for his team. “It was the first time this season we had enough players to start with fifteen. But once the players got used to having not as much space as they were used to, we played some really good rugby. We controlled the game really well, played in the right areas of the pitch and took our chances really efficiently. It got a bit scrappy towards the end and maybe we left a few tries behind us but overall, it was a really good performance.”
“In terms of individuals Sam Ledden was really physical again and Louise Leonard Flood and Kim Littlefield put in really influential, hardworking displays. But the player of the match jointly goes to two players making their first appearance of the season, Lucia Benito Marin and Ellen Crotty. Lucia was ferocious in her ball carrying and made ground every time while Ellen gave us a real cutting edge out wide and was unfortunate not to finish with at least one try. We’ll play our next game at home to Wanderers on the 7th of December so there’s a bit of a gap. But with this sort of form and players coming back from injury, we’re really looking forward to giving Division 5 a real go.”
