The Tallaght’s men’s team took on the Dogos in the O’Connor Cup.
The Dogos scored a try after a minute to take a 5-0 lead. But Tallaght hit back when Adam Nolan powered over from a scrum to make it 5-5. The Dogos scored a try to make it 10-5 to them. But Tallaght hit back again after sustained pressure when Nolan got over for a second try from close range. Luke Maher kicked an excellent conversion to make it 12-10 to Tallaght. But the Dogos scored another converted try to make the half-time score 17-12 to them.
With the wind at their backs for the second half, Tallaght fancied their chances. But the game became increasingly fractious and scrappy and a heavy rain shower didn’t help. The half was scoreless until right before the end when Adam Nolan completed his hat-trick of tries from close range. Tallaght had a conversion kick from out wide to win the game, but it was a difficult kick in the wind and it drifted wide. So with the scores level at 17 points, the game went to extra time.
Tallaght started the first period of extra time superbly when Alex Sadiku offloaded to Simon Collie to score a try under the posts. Raheel Hussain converted to make it 24-17 to Tallaght. Tallaght looked to be in the ascendency but then an ill-judged offload was picked off by the Dogos and ran back for a converted try to level the scores at 24 all. The Dogos then scored two more tries and converted one of them to win 36-24.
Head coach Adam Nolan was proud of his team’s performance in his final game as Head Coach. “We’re disappointed to finish the season today but incredibly proud of the team effort. There was fire in the team today and a really desire and intent in the performance. The team fought hard for 100 minutes and everyone can be proud of the effort, but unfortunately a hard season caught up on us against a very strong team. For me personally I want to thank the players especially the lads who turned up week in week out and the lads who give us a dig out when we were stuck. I want to thank our coaches, Ciaran and Daragh, Director of rugby Tony and Fixtures secretary Jim for their hard work this season. Most of all I want to thank my wife Claire for the endless support over the past few seasons. It hasn’t always been easy but as I step away I hope I’ve left the team in a good place.”
