Three Saints: 3

Tallaght women played their first match of the season against the Three Saints. Three Saints are an amalgamation of players from St Mary’s, Guinness and DLSP. Because Tallaght’s Tymon pitch was deemed unplayable by the council, the game was moved to St. Mary’s ground in Templeville Road.

The Saints dominated the first quarter of the match as Tallaght struggled to get out of their half playing into the strong wind. Tallaght’s defence held out well though and even when the the Saints appeared to look certain to score out wide, a terrific Megan Fogarty cover tackle saved the day. The Saints did win a penalty under the posts though which they converted to take a 3-0 lead.

After fifteen minutes Tallaght started to get some forward momentum through strong carries by the likes of Adriana Silvela, Martina Fitzpatrick and Samantha Ledden. From a tap penalty, skipper Louise Leonard Flood make a strong carry to tie up several defenders. The ball was then moved wide and nice passing from Abbie Keeley and Aisling Pyke put Megan Fogarty in for a try to give Tallaght a 5-3 lead. Not long after, Tallaght earned another opportunity and once again Louise Leonard Flood made a big carry and this time she forced her way over for the try. Abbie Keeley kicked an excellent conversion from out wide to give Tallaght a 12-3 lead at halftime.

The Saints had a good start to the second half in terms of possession and territory but Tallaght held firm with Eileen Shanahan and Kim Letterfield working overtime in the tackle count. Full back Sorca Burns was constantly forced to field long kicks but she ran them back bravely. Niamh Moore came on and put in her usual hard hits.

The Saints were competing well and looked like scoring a try but for a clever interception by Louise Leonard Flood who kicked the ball up the field. Tallaght trapped the Saints inside their own half for the final ten minutes. Eventually the pressure told and Adriana Silvela put Grainne Leonard Flood in for a try under the posts, which she converted herself to make the final score 19-3 to Tallaght.

Tallaght head coach Adam Nolan was delighted for his team to start the season with a win. “We weren’t able to play a preseason game so after a slow start today, we really started to play and secured a good win. We worked very hard on both sides of the ball and, though there are areas to improve, it was an excellent all round performance for the first run-out of the season.”
