Leinster League Division 5
Claremont Road

The Tallaght women’s team took on Lansdowne away in their first game of Division 5 after last week’s game against Wanderers was postponed.

With the squad riddled with flu, Tallaght could only field 11 players, so the teams played 10 a side. Lansdowne were powerful in the carry though and took advantage of the fact that Tallaght had only three backfield players available. They scored five tries and converted four of them to take a 33-0 lead at half-time.

In the second half with the wind behind them Tallaght improved. Megan Fogarty made several try-saving tackles and broke away to score a try of her own in the corner to make it 33-5. Skipper Lorraine McManus made several turnovers and Adriana Silvela put in a big shift in the second row. Louise Leonard Flood kicked well and Kim Littlefield made some massive tackles. Lansdowne scored two more tries in the second half to make the final score 45-5.

Stand-in coach Ken McGovern was proud of his team’s performance in the second half. “When four players withdrew due to illness this morning, a lot of teams would have conceded with only 11 fit players. But the team showed up and competed, especially in the second half which they only lost 12-5. They kept fighting right to the end and it showed their character. This is our final game before the Christmas break and hopefully we can use the break to get players fit and healthy again. On behalf of the club, I want to wish all our players, coaches and supporters a great Christmas and New Year.”
