Leinster League Division 5
Tymon Park
The Tallaght women’s team took on Swords at home in Division 5 in their first game of the year.
With the wind, frequent rain showers and a heavy pitch, it was hard for both teams to play attractive rugby in the first half. Tallaght were playing into a strong wind so kicking wasn’t an option but they kept slogging away against it with Martina Fitzpatrick and Chloe Conroy making lots of strong carries.
Even with the wind behind them, Swords rarely opted to kick. So most of the first half was a bit of a grind. But just before halftime Tallaght worked a fine try for skipper Lorraine McManus and Grainne Leonard Flood kicked a superb conversion from out wide into the wind to make the halftime score 7-0 to Tallaght.
In the second half, Tallaght made good use of the wind behind them through the kicking of Louise Leonard Flood and Chloe Conroy to pin Swords back deep in their half. Tallaght created several chances and eventually Chloe Conroy got over the line for a try, which was a deserved reward for an all action display that earned her the player of the match award. It left the final score 12-0 to Tallaght.
Tallaght head coach Adam Nolan was pleased for his team. “The conditions were difficult but we stuck at our gameplan well and managed the game superbly. Everyone put in a solid shift and I was delighted to see that we got the reward, especially as this was the first game back after Christmas. We’ve Wanderers next week at home and then we have a trip to West Offaly the week after so it’s a busy start to the year but we’re looking forward to it.”
