Carlow 34

Metro League Division 8

Tallaght took on Carlow in Metro League Division 8. With their Tymon Park pitch deemed unplayable, which the Council do for 90% of the time, Tallaght made the trip to Carlow for the second time.

Carlow scored the first try of the match to take a 5-0 lead. But an excellent 50-22 kick from Kevin Quinn gave Tallaght a lineout deep in Carlow territory. After strong carries from Jordan Corrigan and Daithi Mooney, Tallaght earned a penalty which Rob Hudson kicked to make it 5-3. But Carlow hit back with a converted try to make it 12-3 to them at halftime.

In the second half injuries started to affect a Tallaght side already low on numbers as they were forced to play with 14 men. Carlow scored four second half tries to pull away and converted one to make the final score 34-3. It was a bad tempered affair as Tallaght’s Kevin Quinn and Sean Judd, plus three Carlow players were shown yellow cards, mostly for off the ball shuffles.

Despite the scoreline, backs coach Ciaran Rudd was proud of the players’ commitment. “Once again, we were badly stuck for players. So lads carrying knocks togged out and stayed playing when they probably shouldn’t have. Padhraig Jones answered a late night call and played for us for the first time since Covid and put in an eighty minute shift. Daryl Maxwell was immense today, making try saving tackles, winning several turnovers and kicking superbly. So I can’t fault the effort of the guys who turned up, just wish a few more players did turn up.”
