Try: Penalty Try, Sam O’Reilly

Try: Ken McGovern, Paul Lynch, Trevor Byrne
Con: Owen Tyrrell

30/08/14 Tymon Park

To mark Leinster’s second game being played in Tallaght Stadium, Tallaght RFC held a challenge match between past and present players. The old, grizzled ‘Legends’ team carried the ball well into attack and after Derek Burke turned back the clock with a big carry, Ken McGovern eventually got over for the first try.

The Legends doubled their score to 10-0 when scrum-half Paul Lynch got on the end of a lovely loop move taking a fine pass from Owen Tyrrell to go over for an excellent try. Things got a little bit heated for a while after the natural competitiveness spilt over into a few rows which were out of place for the game that was in it. Referee Tony Heaney restored order though and the rest of the match was played in a good spirit.

Tallaght’s current team got on the scoreboard when they were awarded a penalty try and then Stephen Heaney did well to offload in the tackle for Sam O’Reilly to go in for the try to make the score ten-all. Both teams went hell for leather for the winning score but eventually it was Trevor Byrne who won it for the legends after good pressure from the forwards. Owen Tyrell kicked the conversion to leave the final score at 17-10.
