Try: Stephen Heaney
Con: Ciaran Stewart

Metro League Division 7

Donnybrook

Tallaght RFC took on the early season leaders Old Wesley on the brand new all-weather back pitch in Donnybrook Stadium. Despite having a gale force wind blowing behind them, Tallaght were guilty of playing too much rugby in their own half. Wesley took the lead with an early penalty and then added a try with a well-worked maul from a line-out.

Tallaght responded well though and put some decent phases together. Inside centre Stephen Heaney was making some big hits and after a Wesley player was sinbinned, Heaney took advantage when he intercepted a pass and showed great pace to score a try. Ciaran Stewart converted the try and the half-time score was 10-7 to Wesley.

That was as good as it got for Tallaght though. They were guilty of tackling too high in the first half but they mostly got away with it. However in the second half Wesley exploited this failing in Tallaght to a ruthless extent to run in eight more tries to win 58-7.

Last season Tallaght’s defence won them several games and it was because they tackled properly. Before they can hope to improve this season, they need to learn that skill again.
