The Tallaght men’s second team took on Trinity College away in their first match of the Metro League Division 10. Trinity started well and Tallaght were under pressure in their own twenty two but led by flanker Mick Corrigan who put in several fine tackles, they were able to keep Trinity out.

Then from a scrum inside their own half Tallaght number eight Liam Quinn made a superb break that was only stopped five metres from the Trinity line when he was chased down from behind. The Tallaght support didn’t get there in time and the chance was gone. Tallaght had the wind behind them and they went close to scoring on a couple of occasions but Trinity held out. But then the ball went to ground from a Trinity scrum and Liam Quinn picked it up and sprinted away and this time he wasn’t going to be caught and Tallaght led 5-0.

Tallaght were being penalised for high tackles and finally the referee lost patience and showed prop Simon Connollan a yellow card. After fifty minutes Trinity made the pressure count and scored a try to make it 5-5. Then they went close to scoring again but Tallaght wing Alex Sadiku made a superb try-saving tackle on the line. Unfortunately Sadiku injured himself making the tackle and then he was joined on the sideline by out-half Sean Smyth who’d been having a fine first game for the club.

Jordan Corrigan had shipped a knock but bravely rejoined the action but he couldn’t stop Trinity scoring from a short-range scrum. Tallaght hit back and were camped on the Trinity line and looked to have scored at one point but instead the referee penalised them instead. With the referee adding on ten minutes of injury time fatigue caught up with Tallaght at the end and they conceded two very late tries which were both converted to make the final score 24-5 to Trinity College.

Tallaght manager John Cowan was proud of his team’s effort in their first game together. “We have seven lads playing for the seconds team for the first time today. But for sixty minutes we competed really well and went toe to toe with them. But the lack of subs cost us in the last twenty when we tired and a few lads went off injured. But we played some great rugby at times and I’m proud of the lads. Every player played his heart out and the more we play together the better we’ll get.”
