The Tallaght women’s team resumed their Division 5 campaign against bottom placed Newbridge after the Christmas break.
Tallaght started well and scored an early try when Aisling Pyke made a break and when she was hauled down close to the line, the ball was moved wide to full back Jensen Byrne who finished off the try to give Tallaght a 5-0 lead. Then a fine offload from Nicole Fanning put scrum-half Eileen Shanahan away and she out-paced the cover defence to score an excellent try. Grainne Flood converted that try and he was successful again when Aisling Pyke burst over the line from close range to score a try to make it 19-0 to Tallaght. To be fair to Newbridge they kept fighting and they got over for a try to make it 19-5 at half-time.
In the second half Tallaght continued to dominate. First Lisa Connors forced her way over to reward some good carrying by the forwards. Then Nicole Fanning and Sorcha Burns combined excellently to put out-half Grainne Flood over for a try of her own. Then finally Sorcha Burns finished off the scoring with a fine try. Grainne Flood converted all three second half tries to finish with a personal tally of 15 points.
Tallaght coach Hayley White was delighted with her team’s performance. “We were missing a couple of important players today but the girls who came in for them were excellent. They just slotted in seamlessly and it didn’t feel like our first game for six weeks. It was very tough to pick a player of the match today as everyone went well but we gave it to our skipper Eileen Shanahan who scored a superb try and had a fine all round game. Next up is Swords in two weeks time and if we keep our standards high, the wins will take care of themselves.”
